Adding a new domain to HostGator

If you register a domain on a popular site like GoDaddy, you’ll need to tell GoDaddy where your website is hosted.  You do this by pointing GoDaddy to the named servers of your hosting site.  If you use HostGator, you can find your named servers on the left-hand side of your Control Panel homepage.  You should see two.  They will be in the form of:

Name Servers
nsXXXX.hostgator.com
nsXXXX.hostgator.com

Where “X” will be the number of your server.

In GoDaddy, simply click on the domain that you want to use, find the “Namedservers” section, and click on “Manage”:

Setting up WordPress for the First Time

If you have a HostGator account, which I use myself and recommend, here’s a short five-minute video showing you how to set up your WordPress on HostGator.  It’s surprisingly simple, hence only five minutes!

Remember, for each website (or blog…whatever term you prefer), you will install a copy of WordPress.  So, if you have five sites, you’ll have five copies of WordPress installed.  Me, I have more than ten!

Using WordPress as a CMS

WordPress is the best blogging software around.  It’s also becoming a legitimate platform for a full-blown CMS, or Content Management System.  Blogs typically display their content as dated posts in reverse chronological order.  You can change the flow of your WordPress site away from the blog style with just a couple of easy settings changes.

Many business, organizations, and similar sites do this.  They set their site’s homepage to be a static page, an “About” page for example, to be the home page rather their blog.  Some sites will create a blog section, however, as a way to show current information and news.  Many sites will have a page called “Blog” or “Latest News” where their posts appear.

Setting up this in WordPress is a piece of cake.  Watch the following video to learn how.

“Premium News” Theme on Host Gator

“Premium News” is a beautiful free theme by WooThemes, a professional WordPress themes company.  WooThemes has several well-designed, nicely-priced, customizable themes available for purchase.  If you have a blog or site that you need to be in the upper percentile of professional, start your theme search there.

There is a gotcha however when running this theme on a Host Gator hosted site.  The good news is that it’s easy to fix.  Premium News frequently uses resized images to improve the visual look of the home page and individual posts.  The script that manages all of the resizing is called TimThumb and is implemented in the “thumb.php” theme file.  Host Gator has a specialized security system and the script needs to have just a little more access in order to work properly.  So, log into your Host Gator account, start up a live session, and make this request:

Please add following rules [ 1234234,340151 ] to mod_security for www.yourwebsite.com.
Please whitelist for the domain.

Apparently, in for some other versions of the TimThumb script, you need to also have ‘340153′ whitelisted, but request these two above first.

The change just takes a few minutes and you can verify it right away.

What does all the above request mean?  I didn’t get the most clear answer, but here’s the response from the agent chatting with me:

(6:22:56 AM) Norris Co: There are rules in the firewall designed to protect against different exploits and some scripts like word press themes use timthum.php or similar which triggest the rule id’s in the firewall and admins have to whitelist to allow script to work properly.

I wonder what the connection between resizing images and firewalls is.  Does anyone know?

Migrating a WordPress site

I’ve had to migrate several WordPress sites.  Basically, it’s a pretty easy job save one:  Migrating the database.  Well, that part is not really hard; it’s just has a lot of steps and things can go wrong along the way.  Typical errors include accidentally exporting the wrong database, or importing a database on top of an existing and populated database, etc.

I created a doc to walk users through this troublesome part:

Local Installation of WordPress

I looked into running WordPress locally on my Mac. I had to hunt down four things to install and configure: Apache, PHP, MySQL, and WordPress. I spent four to five hours downloading, installing, and troubleshooting. In the end, it wasn’t so hard, but pulling all the info together from various websites was quite time consuming. So, I spent 20 minutes this morning culling the important information and distilled how I did it into a five-page document:

Roles and Capabilities

Roles and Capabilities are defined by the users of a WordPress site.  A user is anyone who has a username and password to a given WordPress site.  Each user has their own Dashboard and options.  Each belongs to any one of five roles.  Here are five types of user roles in WordPress ranked in order of privileges (also known as capabilities):

  1. Administrator (all capabilities)
  2. Editor
  3. Author
  4. Contributor
  5. Subscriber (the fewest capabilities)

For a thorough description of each, visit this topic on the WordPress Codex (the online WordPress help documents).

Have a look at the images below, which show the lefthand WordPress administration menu for each of the five roles.  Looking at each and comparing them will give you a visual idea of how each user role relates to the other.

Pages and Posts

Are you clear on the difference between a page and a post in WordPress?  This is arguably the most important concept to understand in WordPress.  The definition is thankfully simple:

A post is a piece of content that is date or time sensitive.

A page is a piece of content that is not date or time sensitive.

The WordPress Dashboard

The WordPress Dashboard is the first screen you see when you log into your WordPress website. From here, you can get a high level view of all aspects of your blog. Recent versions of WordPress (versions 2.7, 2.8) allow you to customize the look of the Dashboard. If you think the opening screen is too cluttered, use the “Screen Opitions” to clean up the view.

Watch the video below for a quick overview of the WordPress Dashboard and how to manage it.
